San Francisco-based company focused on computer vision-based applications launches the first-ever 3D sensor for mobile devices on Kickstarter.

Up until now 3D scanning hasn’t been mobile. However, once attached to a mobile device, this product, the Structure Sensor will enable exciting new possibilities for mobile 3D applications, including 3D scanning of objects and people and indoor 3D mapping for rapid measurement and modeling of interior spaces.

With the Structure Sensor attached to your mobile device, you can walk around the world and instantly capture it in a digital form. This means you can capture 3D maps of indoor spaces and have every measurement in your pocket. You can instantly capture 3D models of objects and people for import into CAD and for 3D printing. You can play mind blowing augmented reality games where the real world is your game world.

If you’re a developer, Structure gives you the ability to build mobile applications that interact with the three dimensional geometry of the real world for the very first time. You can even launch your app on the App Store!

The Structure Sensor has a mobile-optimized range that begins at 40 centimeters and stretches to over 3.5 meters. It is battery-powered and provides up to 4 hours of active use, and 1000+ hours of standby. The dual infrared LEDs allows your to capture the world in infrared – a night vision to your iPad.

The Structure Sensor currently support iPad (4th generation), but the team states that it can stream data to any iOS device that uses the Lightning connector – such as iPad mini, iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, etc. For an Android device, you may need the applicable USB OTG adapter. The company will also provide an open 3D CAD model for a starter bracket that you can adapt to work with your device and then 3D print.

The company behind Structure Sensor, Occipital is prominent software app development company and previously launched the successful RedLaser and 360 Panorama mobile applications.

The Structure Sensor is available in your choice of two anodized aluminum colors: Ice Blue and Silver. The company offers an EARLY BIRD SPECIAL that backers will receive the the Structure Sensor for iPad or Structure Sensor hacker kit. Check more options and details here on Kickstarter.
